Good morning, well afternoon at this point as I made my best attempt to sleep in this morning! Today, On this Saturday I'd like to start off and offer a remembrance for those lost on 9/11 as it is only right to pay tribute and honor the heroes that lost their lives. Thank you... And now we can get a little CHRONICLYsILLy this morning, but will keep it short and simple so we can all get out and enjoy this lovely Saturday weather (at least here on the east coast it's amazing!) So today, I'd like to present to you a slogan that came up on a whim yesterday as I was taking my breakfast meds (round 1 of the day) and out of nowhere and kind of randomly (I am known for my randomness) I said, "They can't cure it, so they heavily medicate- Educate while we medicate!" as I nonchalantly dumped a pile of meds on the table and proceeded to take them with a glass of water. From this idea, (some how or another!) The idea of a CHRONICLYsILLy medical dictionary (similar to the idea of Urban dictionary) was born. A simple post featuring a few of the common slang and medical terms we spoonies throw around!
The CHRONICLYsILLy Medical Dictionary!
Spoonie- An individual who suffers from a chronic illness; born from Christine Miserando Donato's spoon theory. Ex: I am a spoonie because I have Lupus.
Mocktail- A medical cocktail- a combination of medications that you will see us "spoonies" downing numerous times a day! Ex: I am enjoying my bedtime mocktail!
Lyrica Hangover (medical hangover)- A term used to describe the hangover feeling and grogginess associated with the high number of medications many chronically ill individuals take. Similar to how you feel after a night out of shooting tequilla.
Welp! See ya laters- This is a term used around my household that i figured I would share. It is what we call my codeine/narcotics and painkillers because after i take them its "Welp see ya later" as I am usually sent into a state of endless giggles and drowsiness. Ex: I just took my welp! see ya laters so don't mind me if I seem a bit giddy. Also a tribute to the always classic Dumb and Dumber.
Rheumy- A slang term used in the chronically ill world to refer to their immunology specialist also known as A Rheumatologist. Usually they are the doctors that treat and diagnosis autoimmune diseases. Ex: I had an appointment with my Rheumy today, and he gave me some new medications to try for my pain.
Lupie- A common term used to describe someone that has lupus. Ex: I am a lupie; I a lupie whose feeling kind of loopy today because of my Lupus!
Pred-head- Term used to describe the foggy feeling of someone that takes high doses of prednisone or is on the drug for an extended period of time. Ex: My friend is such a pred-head, she can barely remember to put her pants on before she leaves the house in the morning!
PAD- Prednisone-Induced Attention Deficit disorder- a common symptom or side effect of the dreaded prednisone as it can make you have a short attention span similar to that of those that suffer from ADD, and can also make you hyper focus on unimportant tasks. Ex: My PAD was so bad today I spend 3 and half hours watching videos on you tube on how cell phones can make a popcorn kernel pop and I am still unsure if it's true!
And Those are just some of our wonderful terms and words you will hear us Spoonies throw around quite frequently!
